A KEG tap head is the most important connecting element between the beer keg and the dispensing system. Without the right tap head, the beer cannot be tapped in a controlled manner. It ensures that the beer flows from the keg into the pipe under CO₂ pressure, while the gas simultaneously ensures constant pressure equalisation.

What is the beer keg connection called?
The beer keg connection, also known as the KEG connection or KEG tap head, is the interface between the beer keg and the beer dispensing system. This connection is crucial for the function of a beer dispensing system, as it enables the flow of beer and at the same time regulates the necessary CO₂ pressure in the keg.
There are various types of KEG tapping heads, which differ depending on the type of beer and brewery. Not every beer keg has the same connection - so it is important to choose the right tap head for the beer keg.
How does a KEG dispensing head work?
The KEG tap head is placed on the keg and firmly locked in place. As soon as it is pressed onto the keg or turned, the valve inside opens and allows beer to flow through. At the same time, CO₂ flows into the keg to ensure the correct pressure. This keeps the beer fresh and allows it to be tapped evenly.

The choice of the right KEG dispensing head depends on the keg connection and the brewery used - not every beer keg has the same dispensing system!
🔹 Flat keg tap head (type A)
This tap head is mainly used in Germany and is compatible with many types of beer. It is particularly easy to use and is frequently used in the catering trade and for private use.
🔹 Combination keg tap head (type M)

🔹 Basket keg tap head (type S)
Also known as the "Sankey tap head", this type is used for many international beers, particularly in Europe. It differs from the flat keg tap head in its design and requires a different locking mechanism.
🔹 Köpi keg tap head
Special tap head for certain types of beer such as König Pilsener. It has a specific fit and is not compatible with other keg types.

Construction heights: Cellar tapping vs. bar tapping
The height of a KEG dispensing head determines where it can best be used. There are two main variants:
